S. Eugene ‘Gene’ Pollock

Pollock, GeneS. Eugene ‘Gene’ Pollock, 83, of Warsaw, Ind., passed away Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013, at his home.

 

He was born July 17, 1930, in Pierceton, Ind., to Harry Lemar Pollock and Helen (Keplinger) Pollock. He married Carolyn Hyde on Oct. 23, 2012, Warsaw.

 

Eugene served in the United States Army from Jan. 28, 1949 to Oct. 20, 1952. With scars on his face and shrapnel still imbedded in his legs from being wounded 5 times on the Korean battle front, 20 year old Sgt. S. Eugene Pollock was brought and honored before the Indiana House of Representatives Jan. 15, 1951. He was introduced by Representative Frank O. Rarick of Warsaw as a member of the Fifth Regiment of the First Cavalry Division having engaged in hand combat with Red troops three times. He was wounded in two separate encounters – the communist troops left him for dead at the second one in November because he “played possom'”

His injuries required six hospital stays and following this honor by the state representatives he left for the hospital at Camp Atterbury, Ind., for further surgery on his wounded leg. For his bravery and courage, T-Sgt. S. Eugene Pollock was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation ribbon for being a part of the First Cavalry troops who fought their way out of a Communist trap in North Korea, the Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Korean Campaign Badge and the Japanese Occupation Badge.

 

He worked in maintenance at Whitco Community School System for 22 years retiring in 1993. He then was employed by Warsaw Auto Exchange. He was a member of the American Legion Post 258 (Pierceton) and was past president of the Warsaw Eagles.

 

He is survived by his wife; four sons; three daughters; six grandchildren; a half brother: Herb (Harriett) Dahlquist, Calif.

 

He was preceded in death by a son; a daughter; and two sisters.

 

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, at Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the funeral home. Pastor Bob Brown of God’s Highway to Heaven, Warsaw, will officiate. Military honors will be conducted by Pierceton’s American Legion Post #258. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
