Robert M. Miller
Robert M. Miller, 96, of North Manchester, Ind., passed away at 11:55 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013, in Timbercrest Healthcare Center, North Manchester.
He was born Aug. 7, 1917, in Long Beach, Calif., to Dr. Robert H. and Maude E. (Reiff) Miller. In 1922, he moved to North Manchester. Robert M. Miller attended North Manchester Schools, graduating from Manchester College in 1939. He married Catherine H. Hersch on Feb. 20, 1943. She preceded him in death.
For 2 years, he worked for the C.G. Conn Company of Elkhart, Ind. He served in the United States Army from April 1941 to Nov. 1945. He graduated from Wayne University in Detroit, Mich., with a masters degree in chemistry. He taught science at Avilla, Ind., for 2 years, and from 1950-1963 he was a research chemist relating to photosynthesis and solar energy conversion at the C.F. Kettering Foundation Laboratory in Yellow Springs, Ohio. From 1963-1983, he returned to teaching, first spending 3 years in a Dayton, Ohio high school and then at the Citrus Community College, Glendora, Calif. Following his retirement he enjoyed woodworking.
He is survived by three sons: Mike Miller, Colorado Springs, Colo.; David Miller, Cucamonga, Calif.; Rick Miller, Stockbridge, Mass.; a daughter: Sue Hurd, North Manchester; and their families.
He was preceded in death by a brother: Dr. John D. Miller; and a sister: Mary M. Coe.
In honoring Mr. Miller’s request, private burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester. Arrangements are entrusted to McKee Mortuary, North Manchester.
