Dorothy E. Bumgardner, 86, of South Whitley, Ind., passed away at 1:18 a.m. Friday, Jan. 17, 2014 at Grey Stone Health & Rehabilitation where she had been admitted on Dec. 23.

She was born June 28, 1927, in Allen County, Ind., to J.F. and Marie (Stairhime) Borcherding. Her formative years were spent on a farm in Allen County. She graduated from Monroeville High School and completed her education at International Business College. On July 12, 1946, she was united in marriage to William A. Bumgardner.

They made their home on a farm in Allen County until 2001 when they moved into South Whitley. She was employed at Schaefer Wholesale & Glove Factory from 1946 until 1952 and Winn Dixie in Florida for 16 years.

Surviving relatives include two children: Charles Bumgardner, New York, N.Y.; Reverend Pat (Mary Jane Gibney) Bumgardner, New York, N.Y.; and four sisters: Patricia Ballinger, Sharon Fawley, Donna Hughes and Marilyn Mongovan, all of Fort Wayne, Ind.

She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother: James Borcherding.

Visitation will be held from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at Smith and Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at the funeral home. The burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery.
