Hulda Ramsey Hursh Thornburg
Hulda Thornburg passed away at home on Monday, Sept. 23., 2013.
She was born to Aria and Orval Ramsey on Dec. 17, 1919, in Churubusco, Ind., where she was known for being the star player on the high school girls’ basketball team. She lived there until marrying Charles W. Hursh on Jan. 2, 1937. He, as well as her three siblings, Orval Ramsey, Wanda Chapman, and Edna Shroyer, preceded her in death. After Charles’ death, she married Ralph Thornburg, who also preceded her in death.
Hulda took classes at the Ohio State University, modeled at local department stores, and typed students papers while her husband completed his DO degree in 1940. After living in Rochester, N.Y., they settled in Goshen, Ind., where they raised their three children: Anita Cast (William), Fort Wayne, Ind.; Stanley (Bud) Hursh (Mary), Syracuse, Ind.; and Georgia (Loni) Zeichner, Sarasota, Fla.
While living in Goshen, Hulda was an active community volunteer in Psi Iota Psi sorority, Camp Fire Girls, Goshen Community Schools, Community Chest, and North Central Optometric Society Auxiliary, where she served as President. She also managed her husband’s optometric office for many years after managing Harter’s Sporting Goods Store. She was an avid gardener, cook, and seamstress.
In addition to her children, she is survived by grandchildren: Carter, Jennifer and Meghan Cast; Jeremy and Jeffrey Zeichner; and John and Bradley Hursh; and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. in Trinity Episcopal Church, Fort Wayne, on Saturday, Sept. 28, calling preceding the service in the church parlor at 10 a.m. Burial is to be in Perry Township Cemetery.
