MERRILLVILLE – The Triton boys’ tennis team claimed the championship of the Merrillville Invitational Saturday.
The Trojans won individual championships at two positions en route to winning the eight-team event.
Triton scored 33 points in the tournament, edging past Centreville (32) and host Merrillville (31) for top team honors.
Jared Fisher notched an unbeaten mark at No. 3 singles for the Trojans. Fisher was 3-0 on the day.
The Trojans also got an undefeated performance from Jake Oldham and Austin Sellers at No. 2 doubles. Oldham and Sellers also went 3-0.
The Triton No. 1 doubles team of Lucas Shafer and Darrin Harrell went 2-1 to place second.
Alex Eib was 1-2 at No. 2 singles for the Trojans to place sixth.
Dean Howdeshell was 1-2 at No. 1 singles and placed seventh for Triton. Howdeshell broke strings in both of his rackets in the first set of his first match of the tournament Saturday and had to play the remainder of the day with a borrowed racket.
