897_0000171180Paul L. Thompson, 79, of rural South Whitley, Ind., passed away at 3:55 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013, at his home. He had been in failing health for the past 2 years.

He was born Dec. 5, 1934, in Fort Wayne, Ind., to Chester Arthur and LouEtta (Hinkson) Thompson. His formative years were spent in Laud, Ind. He completed his education at Jefferson Center High School. On Jan. 7, 1953, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving in Guam during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged May 22, 1960. On Dec. 15, 1957, he was united in marriage to Judith E. Reimer. They made their home in Washington Township, Whitley County, Ind., and Laud area before moving to their home northeast of South Whitley in 1963.

Among other jobs, he was employed at Dana Corporation for over 33 years, retiring in 1994. His memberships include American Legion Post #98 where he served as past commander,  life member of V.F.W. Post #2919 and associate of the V.F.W. Post #5582.

Surviving relatives include his wife; four children: Paula Thompson, South Whitley; Edward (Betsy) Thompson, West Lafayette, Ind.; Jeffrey (Julie) Thompson, South Whitley; and Ernest Thompson, Columbia City, Ind.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother: Clarence Thompson, Columbia City.

He was preceded in death by three brothers: Robert Dale Thompson, Arthur Deloren Thompson and Garland Thompson.

Visitation will take place from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 30, at the funeral home. Burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery with military honors presented.
