Area residents have reportedly received calls from an alleged state office demanding money. Investigators of the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department are warning citizens not to give out personal information.

Officers have recently received reported incidents of residents being contacted via telephone by someone identifying themselves as a representative of the District Attorney’s Office in Indianapolis. The caller apparently says he has personal information about the individual and claims there is a large amount of money that they currently owe. The would-be victims are also advised they need to pay a portion of it immediately or risk being arrested if they do not comply.

KCSD Detectives urge citizens to be very protective of their personal information. Callers of this scam have reportedly been using a 786 area code.

If contacted, officers advise the public to simply tell the caller you will be contacting your local law enforcement agency and disconnect the call. Currently, detectives are unaware of any local citizens who have actually sent funds to the alleged scam artist.
