Wawasee picked up a pair of singles and doubles wins to capture its first team win of the season, beating Lakeland 4-1 Wednesday night in Lagrange.

Kyler Love rolled in singles play, beating Dalton Schmid two and one while Cal Heinisch earned his first varsity win, three and four, against Christian Rose. The doubles combo of Dylan Houser and Chase Myers worked for a four and love win versus Sam Miller and Ian Sonner while Doug Hapner and Jake Hutchinson paired up for a two and three victory opposite Anthony Combs and Austin Hoeffler.

Luke Smith and Kevin Carpenter had Wawasee’s only JV win Wednesday.

The Warriors (1-1) will keep moving forward with a home match Thursday against Northern Lakes Conference foe Plymouth. First serve is set for 4:30 p.m.

Golfers Drop The Ball

In a surprising tally Wednesday night, Wawasee shot 20 strokes higher than its season average to lose its first dual girls golf match of the season. Posting a 213, Wawasee lost head-to-head to Plymouth’s 196 but did even its NLC mark at 1-1 as Elkhart Memorial registered a 241 at Plymouth Country Club.

Golfing for just the second time away from Syracuse this fall, Wawasee showed road course rust as Mikala Mawhorter posted the team’s best score at 48, but Courtney McDaniel’s 53 was next best, followed by a 55 from Elizabeth Jackson and 57 from Aubrey Schmeltz.

Plymouth were led by the 47 from Emily Denney and 48 from Randi Dunn. Memorial’s Hannah Dillman had the team’s best number at 52.

Wawasee, which had averaged a 191 in its previous four duals or triangulars, fall to 7-1 on the varsity season and will prepare for entry in the Rochester Invite Saturday morning, first tee at Mill Creek set for 7:30 a.m.

The Plymouth JV also did its job at home, beating Wawasee 207-260. Kamryn Foy had Wawasee’s best score with a 55 Wednesday afternoon.
