Despite published reports in another newspaper, Erin Smith not Erin Jones, is the new director of operations of the North Webster Community Center.

Smith is a resident of North Webster and a Wawasee High School graduate with an extensive background to prepare her for the position. She was formerly the executive director of North Webster Daycare Center and  community impact coordinator at United Way-Kosciusko. She has grant writing experience and has been a fifth grade teacher.

“It was just an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. I certainly wasn’t planning on looking for another job but I was encouraged to apply, going through the application and interview process with several other candidates. We have been involved with the North Webster Community Center since moving back to the area in 2006. Our girls just love to spend time here,” she explained.

Smith added, “It is close to my heart. I want to see the legacy of the center continue on through the generations.”

Plans are underway for the Heart of the Community Charity Auction, beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5. “This is the biggest fundraiser for the center, which gets no property tax dollars. It’s all, fees, donations and grants. The community has been so supportive over the years.”

“I am open to any ideas that anyone may have for the use of the community center. It is their center and they should have input in what is offered. I am excited for the opportunity to work in the community and to give back to it. However, it’s important to note that free use is problematic. If everyone uses it for free then it won’t be here to use in the future.”

As operations director, she oversees the former North Webster School building’s maintenance, rentals of office and party space, program development, grant writing and fundraising with the help of the board of directors. North Webster Community Public Library, Senior Primelife Enrichment Center, Art Center, Tippecanoe Watershed Foundation and Kosciusko YMCA are just some of the organizations located in the building along with a few private businessess that rent office space.

The school gym is almost in constant use for pickleball, gymnastics and basketball as well as fundraising events and ballroom dances. North Webster High School Alumni Association will hold their annual dinner Saturday in the gym, which certainly brings back memories for those attending.

Smith said, “I’m so thankful people in North Webster have been so patient and kind as I learn the job.” Her experience in administration and knowledge of the area should help her adjust quickly.

Abigail beter known as Abi, age nine, and Alexandra, who goes by Ali, age six, are frequent visitors at the center whether its using the library or taking a tennis class. Living only two blocks away makes it very handy for the family. “The flexibility is just unbeatable while the girls are growing up.”
