Winona Lake Fire Department was called at about 2:15 p.m. Saturday for a full assist with Claypool at a house fire.

The fire, according to Squad 70 Investigator Gordon Baker, started in the basement of a modular home at 5976 50 West. The modular is owned by Dave Kotterman.

Just after 3 p.m. Squad 70, which is the county’s fire investigation team, was called to investigate a cause for the blaze. According to Baker, the fire appears to be accidental and likely resulted from a lightweight extension cord that was being used to operate a water softener.

The fire was contained to the basement and caused minimal damage including smoke damage to the upstairs living quarters.

The American Red Cross of Kosciusko County assisted the Claypool family with shelter, food and clothing. If you would like to help provide assistance to local families, you can make a disaster relief donation to the American Red Cross of Kosciusko County by calling 574-267-5244
