Leroy R. Rapp, 89, Winona Lake, passed away at 12:29 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2020, at his home. He was born on Dec. 1, 1930, in Urbana, to Lorin L. and Virga (Amber) Rapp.
He graduated in 1948 from Muncie Central High School, attended Ball State University in Muncie and then graduated in 1953 from Indiana Central College in Indianapolis. He received his Master’s Degree from Butler University in Indianapolis and was a United States Navy veteran. He was married on April 11, 1954, in Indianapolis to Hope E. Fruth who preceded him on July 6, 2009, and then on Sept. 11, 2010, in North Webster, he married Carol M. (Kinsey) Carlin who survives.
He retired in 1990 from Wawasee Community School Corporation. He taught 36 years as a guidance counselor, social studies, and physical education teacher at Perry East Jr. High in Southport and Syracuse Elementary and Jr. High Schools. He was a coach for many school sports and served as athletic director when he was in Southport. He moved to Pierceton in June 1970 from Indianapolis, IN and then to Warsaw and Winona Lake area in 2010.
He was a longtime member of the North Webster Church of God and Wawasee Camp of the Gideon’s International in Syracuse. He was a former member of the Wawasee Kiwanis Club in Syracuse. He joined forces with the Wycliffe Bible Translators and was involved on many missions’ trips including two years in Papua New Guinea and two years in Davao, Philippines.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Rapp, Winona Lake; daughter, Sharon (David) Matti, Milford; son, Chuck (Pam) Rapp, Brownsburg; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; sister, Rosalie Eiler, Naperville, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., on Thursday, March 19, at Owen Family Funeral Home, SR 13 and CR 500N, North Webster. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 20, at the Church of God, 300 N. Main St., North Webster, with Pastors Jeff Boyer & Bryan Benjamin officiating. Burial will take place in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Larwill.
