WINONA LAKE – After a remarkable first season in a Grace College softball uniform, outfielder Brooke Shell was named the Newcomer of the Year by the Crossroads League.

Shell led Grace’s softball team in many offensive categories and broke the program’s record for most hits in a season during the 2013 campaign.

Shell batted .438 as the team’s leadoff hitter, which was the fifth-highest average in team history. Her nine triples was No. 1 in the NAIA, and her 77 hits on the season ranked No. 1 in Grace’s record books.

She was a major reason for Grace’s success during the spring, helping the Lady Lancers to their most wins (19) since 1997.

The sophomore outfielder, who was also named to the Crossroads League All-Tournament Team, became Grace’s first .400 batter since 1997. She provided her hits when they were needed the most, hitting safely in 29 of Grace’s final 33 games.

Additionally, with 21 stolen bases during the 2013 season, Shell already ranks ninth among Grace’s career stolen bases leaders.

Other Lady Lancers who were honored at the end of the season include junior Olivia Winget and freshmen Danielle Wellman and Lacey Little, who each appeared on the honorable mention list for All-League honors.
