The investigation into how a 2-year-old boy suffered a skull fracture continues in Kosciusko County where the toddler’s mother has now also been charged.
Amanda Everly, 24, 1470 E. 500 S., Warsaw, was arrested Tuesday for neglect of a dependent, a class D felony.
Everly’s boyfriend, Bradley V. Waikel, 24, was arrested Thursday for felony neglect of a dependent resulting/causing serious bodily injury. An additional felony charge of battery of a child under the age of 14 resulting/causing serious bodily injury has also been filed. (See related story)
An investigation began by the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department on Thursday when emergency room officials at Kosciusko Community Hospital notified them about the toddler’s condition. Everly took her son to the hospital for treatment of what was determined to be a skull fracture. The boy also had multiple bruises to his head, face, arms, side and his back, and his groin area was red and swollen.
Detectives said the 2-year-old was transferred from KCH to Riley’s Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Everly told hospital nurses that her son fell from a bed. Present at the hospital during questioning was Kelly Bugg of Child Protective Services. The toddler told Bugg, “Brad did it.”
Everly then told the investigating officer that while she was leaving the residence, Waikel was spanking the boy for dirtying his diaper and he was “very angry.” She said he admitted to her he hit the boy on his genitalia with a wooden spoon.
Everly told investigators Waikel is often too forceful in disciplining the boy and she has addressed the matter in the past with him. She noted he smokes marijuana daily and the couple make a living by selling drugs.
During questioning with police, Waikel admitted to hitting the boy with an open hand, using the wooden spoon to hit him and using pressure points behind the child’s ears.
Waikel is currently being held in the Kosciusko County Jail on a $100,000 bond. Everly’s bond was set at $5,000.
