NEW PARIS — A pilot and co-pilot made an emergency landing in a field in the area of east CR 17, north of CR 42, between New Paris and Foraker after the plane lost power. The report was received at 6:58 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the sheriff’s department release, the pilot, Nevin Hershberer, 25, LaGrange and his co-pilot, Gary Sample, 63, Goshen, were conducting a test flight of a 1977 fixed wing single-engine Cessna 152 and was attempting to land at the Goshen Airport, five miles away. During the flight, the plane experienced mechanical failure and unsuspected power loss. As a result of the power loss, the plane did not have the appropriate altitude to make a landing at the airport and made the emergency landing in a field.

The plane sustained minor damage to its fuel tank after the landing.

Hershberger and Sample were checked by paramedics at the scene but refused medical treatment. No injuries were reported.
