GOSHEN – Wawasee boys track coach Scott Lancaster was concerned with seeing improvement from his team Saturday in the Goshen Relays.

The Warrior boss got his wish.

“I thought we competed well,” said Lancaster after seeing his team finish in fifth place among 23 teams in Class B competition at Foreman Field. “We wanted to see what some of our younger kids could do and we wanted to target a few areas for improvement.

“Those were the big goals for us today. We made progress in some areas and that was good to see. Our training has been so inconsistent so far because of the weather.”

Fairfield claimed its fifth straight Class B team title on a windy and cold day in the 71st annual relays. The Falcons racked up 99 points to outdistance Gary West Side’s 88. Wawasee was fifth with 62 points and Whitko tied for 10th place with 41.

The Warriors notched a pair of championship performances. The Distance Medley relay team of Adam Doll, Matt Miller, Jaxon Barnes and Zach Cockrill won their event in 11:23.64. Wawasee also took first in the 4 X 100 relay as Michael Pena, Jacob Hutchinson, JJ Gilmer and Clayton Cook prevailed in 46.13.

Lancaster had high praise for the work of Hutchinson, only a sophomore.

“We had someone sick and put Jake in there and he did a great job today,” Lancaster said. “This was just the second time for him on the varsity level. He’s really stepped up his game for us.”

Gilmer placed third in the high jump by clearing 6-1 for the Warriors. He also was sixth in the long jump with a top leap of 19-10.

Chad Eppley was fourth in the shot put with a top toss of 48-3.

“Chad had another PR in the shot today,” noted Lancaster. “He’s just done a tremendous job stepping up for us this season.”

Adam Doll was second in the 1,600-meter run for the Warriors. Clayton Cook took third in the 110 hurdles.

“Clayton is trying to find his rhythm right now, like a lot of hurdlers because of the lack of training so far,” said Lancaster.

The Warriors also got a second-place finish in the 800 Sprint Medley relay from the team of Pena, Hutchinson, Cook and Gilmer.

Connor Stouder led the way for Whitko Saturday. He placed second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.60 and also ran the anchor leg on the winning 4 X 200 relay team. Stouder teamed with Tyler Sherwin, Blake Sapp and Maley Stewart to win in a time of 1:40.60.

Brady Herendeen captured third place in the long jump for the Wildcats with a top effort of 20-2.

Wawasee is scheduled to compete at Goshen on Monday in NLC action versus the host Redskins and Concord.
