FORT WAYNE – Congressman Jim Banks (IN-03) announced Monday he supports a federal investigation into the discovery of more than 2,200 fetal remains found in the late Dr. Urlich Klopfer’s home in Illinois.

Dr. Klopfer, an osteopathic physician, operated a clinic in South Bend, which closed down when his license was revoked in 2016. He was accused of failing to report to authorities abortions performed on a 13-year-old girl. Various news outlets reported that he failed to ensure staff presence during procedures.

Authorities uncovered 2,426 fetal remains at Dr. Klopher’s home after his death on Sept. 3.

“We need to determine how Dr. Klopfer was able to get away with this for so long, and how we only know about it now that Dr. Klopfer is deceased,” said Rep. Banks.

Rep. Banks stressed the need to learn how many staff were aware of Dr. Klopher’s crimes at his clinic.
