I first met Robert Hudson when he had his wonderful gallery in Winona Lake. He had recently returned from 20 years spent in Idaho on a ranch.
From his rodeo days until now, Hudson has built on his experiences to create meaningful and beautiful artwork. I have watched his career and talent continue to develop and blossom into an incredible ability to capture moments. Hudson will be given locals a rare opportunity to meet with him and view his work along with a chance to learn about his amazing books at his exhibit at the Lakeland Art Association, beginning this week. Like many artistic and creative souls, he has written four books in addition to his art work. Oh, by the way, he is a talented cellist and has a deep love of music. Can we call him multi-talented? That’s a resounding “yes.”
Hudson has won too many awards to list them all, but he excels in monumental landscapes in oil as well as having a delicate touch with his nearly magic pencil. He has scattered his work all over Indiana with his murals on city walls, one of which you can see happening now in downtown Warsaw. The mural is located across from the county courthouse in the passage heading to the historical museum. Hudson continues to surpass each work with yet another breathtaking example of his talent. His love of the west is evident in exquisite portrayals of the landscape and animals he portrays. Remember, he actually rode in those rodeos on similar horses to the ones he has included in his paintings.
We will discuss more about Hudson in a future column but take the time to go visit his exhibit at Lakeland Art Gallery. Just take a short drive to 302 E. Winona Avenue to find the Lakeland Art Association gallery. His work will be on display from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Also, to meet him in person, please plant o attend a program he will present at the Lakeland Gallery at 7 p.m. Sept. 23. He will be happy to sign a book for you.
