
Mr. Jack L. Smiley, 85, Rochester passed away at 5:20 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2019 at his home.
On Dec. 3, 1933, Jackie Lee Smiley was born in Rochester to Russell and Leah Downs Smiley. He graduated with the Class of 1951 from Rochester High School.
Answering the call of patriotism, he entered the US Army and worked as a supply clerk in California and Washington, during the Korean War. He jumped at the opportunity to go to France when that same position opened across the pond. He was honorably discharged in 1955.
Jack and Joyce A. Lowe were married on Sept. 28, 1956, in Rochester. They shared 48 years of life’s adventures. Their union produced two handsome sons, Marc and Jon.
When he returned stateside he worked at the Kingsbury Munitions Plant, then did stints for Bendix and driving a taxi. For 25 years, he delivered mail for the US Post Office, retiring in 1976. Jack was a member of the First Baptist Church. To relax he enjoyed re-purposing treasures he discovered at yard sales and auctions. Jack loved being with friends and eating out. He loved automobiles and had his eye on the most expensive ones.
Left to cherish the memories of Jack are a son, Jon Smiley of Kewanna; daughter-in-law, Nicole Smiley of Rochester; sisters, Barbara Ogle of Rochester, Jane Smiley of Northville, MI; brother, Jerry Smiley of Rochester; nieces and nephews: Deb Dierdorf, Terri Airgood, George Brownfield and Christine Chaffin.
Preceding him in death are his parents Russell and Leah Smiley, beloved wife Joyce on April 14, 2004, and son Marc Smiley on Jan. 31, 2016.
A celebration of the life of Mr. Jackie Lee Smiley will be at noon on Saturday, Aug. 17, in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 West 18th St., Rochester. Friends may visit with the family from 4-6 p.m. on Friday, August 16, 2019 and one hour prior to the service on Saturday in the funeral home. Interment will be in the Rochester IOOF Cemetery.
