WARSAW — Police and school officials are putting a punctuation mark on an effort to improve traffic safety inside school zones and around school buses.

Area communities have beefed up police patrols in school zones and are watching for infractions by motorists maneuvering around school buses as the new school year gets underway.

Warsaw Community Schools issued a news release Tuesday afternoon saying that more than 25 motorists had been pulled over inside school zones on Tuesday, which marks the first day of school in the Warsaw School district.

Meanwhile, an area motorist was arrested on two traffic-related issues Tuesday including a charge for passing a stopped school bus.

Carlos Jose Ramirez, 26, of Warsaw, was booked Tuesday for operating a vehicle without ever obtaining a license and for reckless driving — passing a stopped school bus. Details about the incident were not available.

WCS staff and administrators urge the public to adhere to traffic regulations in all school zones as well as at school bus stops where students both big and small rely on drivers to obey traffic laws in order to ensure their safety, the school said in a prepared statement.
