WARSAW — A Bunker Hill man who police said was driving a stolen car when it ran into a train will face multiple charges related to the incident.

James Douglas Cable, 47, 3038 West CR 850S, Bunker Hill, is charged with theft, a class A misdemeanor; failure to stop after a vehicle accident, a class B misdemeanor; possession of paraphernalia, a class C misdemeanor; operating a vehicle while never having been licensed, a a class C misdemeanor; and failure of a sex offender to possess identification, a class A misdemeanor.

According to the report from Warsaw police, arrived at the scene of a car-train crash on July 12 and were told by witnesses that all three occupants of the vehicle that hit the train had fled. A short distance from the scene, police located the two passengers and Cable, determined to be the driver, was found hiding in a camper south of the accident scene.

Police ran a check on the vehicle and discovered it had been stolen. The owner of the vehicle told police that when her vehicle was stolen, it had a registered handgun under the seat, which police could not find. Police also found a glass smoking device, one pill and the odor of marijuana in the vehicle. Police reported that Cable did not have a driver’s license and that he had at least two prior convictions for auto theft in local courts.

Cable is due in Kosciusko County Superior Court on Aug. 27 at 8:15 a.m. for an initial hearing.
