Wawasee logoSYRACUSE — A second-set rally by Sam Prins fueled a comeback to give Wawasee enough mojo to get past Lakeland, 3-2, in girls tennis Monday night at Wawasee.

Prins was down 5-2 in the second set to Amanda Miller before rallying to take four of the next five games to force a tiebreaker. Prins won the tiebreaker, 7-2, to win the deciding court, 7-6, after beating Miller 6-4 in the opening set. The victory by Prins on the three singles court gave Wawasee the needed three court wins to claim the team victory.

“Good, hard-fought match upon returning from spring break and battling the wind,” said Wawasee head coach Chris Winters.

Also claiming court wins Monday night were the other two Wawasee singles courts. Esther Hermann rolled at one singles in beating Carlee Richardson love and one while Katy Ashpole took honors in the two singles match against Audrey Stephens three and two.

Lakeland forged ahead in the doubles matches, with a 6-3, 6-2 win on the one doubles court by Nikki Chavez-Fearnow and Becca Wooster against Priscilla Par and Jada Antonides. The tandem of Monique Brits and Cori Vaughn grabbed a 6-2, 6-4 win at two doubles against opponents Natalie Fritz and Molly Smith.

Lakeland took all five of the JV matches. Blake Mullet of Lakeland and Jaclyn Miller of Wawasee had the most entertaining JV match, with Mullet hanging on for a 12-10 win on the singles courts.

Wawasee (1-1) will look to keep the momentum going Tuesday night with a roadie at Westview.
