WINONA LAKE – The Grace College softball team showed its resilience Saturday to win both games of a doubleheader with Roosevelt University.

Grace, which trailed in both games, erupted for 25 runs in the pair of contests in front of a festive Miller Field crowd, winning 11-4 in the first game and 14-11 in a second-game thriller.

After falling behind 2-0 and later 4-2 to Roosevelt in the opener, Grace’s offense erupted for nine runs over a four-inning span to run away from the Lakers.

Grace took the lead for good in the fourth inning when Brooke Shell and Lacey Little singled and proceeded to come home, handing the Lady Lancers a 5-4 lead.

Grace asserted control of the game in the next inning with a five-run outburst. The Lady Lancers put their first three batters safely on base. Later in the inning Danielle Wellman singled in a pair of runs, and Alex Shipley laced a two-out, two-run double to left field.

The Lady Lancers (7-15) tallied 15 hits, three doubles and seven stolen bases in an impressive performance. Tiffany Featherston finished a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with three runs scored and three stolen bases.

Little went 3-for-5, and Wellman led all players with three RBIs.

Olivia Winget picked up the win on the mound, allowing seven hits and four runs in a complete-game effort. She struck out five batters.

In the second game, the Lady Lancers found themselves in a massive 10-3 hole to the Lakers (3-13) entering their half of the third inning. Grace made several charges at Roosevelt’s lead in the bottom of the third and fourth innings, however.

Freshman Morgan Cody launched a two-run home run over the center field fence with two outs in the third. Grace was then the beneficiary of three Laker fielding errors in the fourth inning to plate three more runs. Winget’s single to score Wellman cut Roosevelt’s cushion to 10-8.

Grace still trailed 11-8 entering the bottom of the sixth until they made a comeback to remember.

The Lady Lancers managed to plate one runner before picking up their second out on a line drive to third base. The next five batters for Grace each reached base safely to shock Roosevelt and take a 14-11 lead. Shell provided the go-ahead RBI with a triple, and Little also doubled in the inning.

Shipley finished the comeback on the mound in the top of the seventh, striking out the final batter to end the game.

All nine batters for Grace recorded a hit in the second game. Winget was an offensive force with a 3-for-4 performance and five RBIs, which included a three-run home run in the first inning.

Wellman was 3-for-5 with three runs, and Little also scored three times.

The Lady Lancers will host four opponents at Miller Field this week on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Their week begins with a doubleheader against Siena Heights at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
