James E. ‘Jim’ Hershberger, 96, of Syracuse, Ind., passed away at 4:35 p.m. on Sunday, March 24, 2013 at his Dewart Lake Home.
He was born on Oct. 8, 1916, in Bremen, Ind., to Clement Conrad and Harriet Etta (Schlosser) Hershberger.
He graduated from Bremen High School and attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. He was married on Jan. 1, 1939, in Plymouth, Ind., to Mildred Beyler who preceded him in June 1950. He later remarried on Feb. 12, 1959, in Bremen, Ind., to Elva C. (Haney) Huff who preceded him on Feb. 16, 2012.
He was a farmer in Bremen for many years, formerly sold Funks G. Hybrid Corn, was a salesman at Smiley Pole Buildings in Denver, and worked for Borkholder Buildings in Nappanee, Ind., for several years.
He moved to Syracuse, Ind., (Dewart Lake) in 1964 from Bremen. He was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Syracuse where he was part of the Questers Class. He was formerly a member and attended Grace United Methodist Church in Bremen.
He is survived by two daughters: Lois Lindenfeld, Raleigh, N.C.; and Sherry (Bill) Newcum, Syracuse; a son: Phil (Gwen) Hershberger, Bremen; a stepdaughter: Donna (Steve) Wagner, Elkhart, Ind.; stepson: Keith (Janice) Huff, Marion; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives; and a son: Jay Leslie Hershberger.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 28, at Owen Family Funeral Home, 1001 S. Huntington St., Syracuse, and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church. Services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 29, at Calvary United Methodist Church, 801 N. Huntington St., Syracuse, with Pastor David Herr of the church officiating. Graveside services will follow at 2 p.m. Friday in the Bremen Cemetery.
