BOURBON — A Bourbon woman was identified by the Marshall County Coroner’s Office as the victim of a Saturday crash involving her green Toyota Camry and a tanker.
The crash occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, at the intersection of Beech Road and US 30 in eastern Marshall County, and resulted in the death of Velma Shupp, 62, of Bourbon.
According to police, Shupp was traveling southbound on Beech Road and attempted to cross US 30, an intersection that has a stop sign on Beech Road and free-flowing traffic moving east and west.
Shupp’s vehicle was struck by a semi tanker truck, driven by John Holtz of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, traveling eastbound and dragged several hundred feet.
First responders initially called for helicopter support and dispatched the assistance of Etna Green firefighters for help with a landing zone, but called off the bird when Shupp was pronounced dead at the scene.
Traffic slowed in the westbound lanes during the aftermath of the crash and was held at a standstill in the eastbound lanes until the first waves of eastbound traffic were allowed to trickle through beginning at 5:25 p.m. However, it took some time before the flow of eastbound traffic returned to normal.
