Harold F. Kyler Jr., 82, a lifelong resident of Columbia Township, Whitley County, Ind., passed away at 7:25 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at Miller’s Merry Manor where he had been a resident since January 2010.

He was born Nov. 16, 1930, in Whitley County, to Harold F. and Carrie Jane (Evard) Kyler Sr. He completed his education at Columbia City High School. On June 14, 2008, he was united in marriage to Betty M. Shafer Hess.

On Sept. 14, 1951, he was inducted in the United States Army, serving during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged Sept. 13, 1959. He was employed at the Whitley County Highway Department from 1954 to 1964 and retired in 1992 from Food Marketing with 28 years of service. He was a member of Eberhard Lutheran Church and Columbia Township, Ind., Volunteer Fire Department for over 42 years and collected antique gas engines.

He is survived by his wife; two children: Diane Sue (Bill) Clark, Hockessin, Del.; Michael Allen Kyler, Leesburg, Ind.; a step-son: Stephen (Darlene) Hess, Columbia City, Ind.; a granddaughter: Stephanie Marie Clark; four step-grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren; two sisters: Mary Phillips and Viola Bird, both of Columbia City; and two brothers: David Kyler and James Kyler, both of Columbia City.

He was preceded in death by an infant son: Steven Kyler; his parents; step-mother: Iris Kyler; and brother: Richard Kyler.

The visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, June 30, at the Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.

The burial will be in Nolt Cemetery with military honors presented by Whitley County Korean War Veterans Honor Guard.

Preferred memorials are to Eberhard Lutheran Church or New Hope Wesleyan Church.
