BOURBON — Triton freshman Madeline Doll got her first start Friday, and it was a rough one.

Visiting Jimtown shelled her for 11 runs — eight in the first inning alone — to chase her early in the second. Erin Ogle took over inside the circle and slowed some of the bleeding, but not enough to prevent a five-inning, 17-1 drubbing by the Jimmies in Bourbon.

“Young pitching — we’ve got two freshman pitchers. The first start, obviously a lot of walks,” said Triton coach Shannon Houlihan. “We’re trying to get Madeline up to speed pitching more and more. Erin can’t do it all. That’s the reason why we started her tonight was to give Erin a little bit of a break. Erin throws strikes. We’ve just got to have the defense behind it, but we’ll get there.”

Jimtown collected 12 hits in Bourbon led by Gabby Desimone’s 3-for-4, three-run, two-RBI performance at the plate. But the Jimmies also capitalized on nine walks on the way to the win, seven thrown by Doll in the first two frames alone, as they bolted out to a 13-1 lead. Seven errors by Triton’s very young squad didn’t help matters much, either, but the inexperienced Trojans are still learning the game on the way to a 3-10 start, says their coach.

“In practices we take what errors we make and we go over those in practice so hopefully it’ll sink in,” said Houlihan. “We’ll take these errors that we made tonight and we’ll go over it. We practiced the rundown. I don’t know how many times we’ve practiced that in practice. I think the girls are getting it. Some of them, it’s their first time playing, and a lot of them don’t know the rules. We take practice seriously as far as rules. We go over umpire calls — what does that mean? We’re kind of letting them learn the actual game of softball. I think once they get that, it will come.”

The Trojans plated just one run in the first when Doll coaxed a one-out walk from Jimtown starter Haley Holmes, a Jaelyn Bules single moved her all the way to third, and Skyla Wilson drove her in with a two-out fly to right. Wilson finished 2-for-2 with an RBI to lead her team on a four-hit night.

Madeline Doll scores Triton’s only run Friday.

“She’s my cleanup hitter, and I know as a junior she’s got a lot of power behind her. That’s why I’ve got her in that spot. We’ve just got to get those runners on base so she can score them,” said Houlihan of Wilson.

Doll got the loss in her first start, surrendering five hits and seven walks with one strikeouts for 12 runs, eight earned. Ogle surrendered sven hits and two walks for five runs, three earned, in four innings pitched.

Holmes got the win in the circle allowing two hits and one walk with two strikeouts for one earned run through two innings. Makenna Betzer surrendered a walk and two hits with two more strikeouts in three shutout innings.

Jimtown improves to 9-5. Triton will look to bounce back in a Hoosier North Athletic Conference game with Culver Monday in Bourbon.
