Tracy Chevalier has written a book imagining the life of pioneer paleontologist, Mary Anning. Remarkable Creatures is yet another book dedicated to revealing the scant evidence from the life that Anning lived as a respected but dismissed scientist in the early 1800’s. She was dismissed because she lived in poverty and therefore had no status as a person. And, she was a woman at a time when women had little value.

Chevalier creates a world where Anning is supported by friends. Although much is not known about Anning’s life, there are records of kindness and professional connections that eased her dismal life. Place an Evergreen hold or call the library for assistance in getting a copy. The book club meets on the second Wednesday of the month.
