SYRACUSE — Those that are returning from their warmer winter climates will find some new things of interest at the Syracuse Public Library.

A library card will check out a mobile hotspot for a week and there are new databases to explore. New programs, such as Harry Potter for adults, Dungeons and Dragons for young adults and American-style Mahjong are also offered several times a month.

The children’s department is showing Syracuse Elementary kindergarteners and first-graders important things that they can do at the library and spending May preparing an exciting summer reading program, “Reading Takes You Everywhere.” Plan to join the activities after June 2.

The library will also be closed for a biannual staff training day on Friday, May 3.

A Universe of Stories

Adults are starting summer reading adventures this May. Bullet journals are the best way to organize and record daily activities, so as The Guide says, don’t panic. Kim Blaha, who has relied on bullet journals for several years, is sharing her favorite techniques at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 7.

Save the date to go out on the Syracuse-Wawasee trails to take a look at the new moon. At 8 p.m. Saturday, May 18, a group will walk to Henry Ward Park while reading from “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.” Trivia and fun facts will round out the evening. The cloud-cover or rain date is June 15.

Towel Day is Saturday, May 25, and is also the day that Ray Boomhower is coming to talk about being the author of 11 biographies of famous Hoosiers. He is focusing on the story of John Bartlow Martin, who rose from a working-class neighborhood in Indianapolis to become one of the most respected journalists from the Midwest. Boomhower is speaking at the Community Center at 11 a.m.

Refreshing French Horns

The Friends are advance-selling tickets for their annual salad luncheon at 11:30 a.m. May 2. The entertainment is the music and stories of French horn musicians Erin Yoder and Kim Blaha.

Learn ways to save money on prescription medications at 1 p.m. Monday, May 20. Purdue Extension Educator Jackie Franks is presenting several strategies and little known ways to cut prescription costs.

Family Fun Night is a time for gross-out games and pizza. The challenges will begin at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 30. Families must call in with topping selections to attend the evening’s activities.
