MILFORD — At the Feb. 11 meeting of the Milford Town Council, Steven Marquart, water operator and street superintendent, discussed two of the town’s major infrastructure projects for 2019. The projects involve paving, replacement of outdated water lines and the addition of hydrants.

In 2018, Milford was awarded a Community Crossing grant of $117,643 to pave two streets: Old SR 15, from Syracuse Street to CR 1300N; and West Street, from Fourth to Catherine streets.

At the Feb. 11 meeting, the council chose Phend and Brown, a Milford company, to perform the work, after hearing its bid of $133,969.75. The competing bid, from Rieth Riley Construction Co., was $144,480.95.

The council also approved two projects aimed at improving water service in Milford. A 300-foot length of 2-inch water line stretching along Emeline Street from Elm Street to the main lift station will be replaced. A new hydrant will also be added. The work is to be performed by Beer and Slabaugh at a cost of $20,400.

An out-of-service — or “black-bagged” — hydrant at the east end of Williams Street will also be replaced. The work will cost a maximum of $6,100.

Marquart stated he would “like to do more” to improve water infrastructure in Milford, dating back 100 years in some places, but the 2019 budget does not allow for additional projects.
