SYRACUSE — The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office has requested the assistance of the Indiana State Police to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday afternoon, Feb. 1 in Syracuse.

Dale Harner, 27, was arrested, but also taken to an area hospital after police served a felony warrant at a 505 North Huntington St.

According to a KCSO report, when officers arrived to serve the warrant, Harner retreated into the residence, but later brandished a weapon, prompting SWAT member Travis Shively to open fire. Harner was not struck by gunfire, but suffered bite wounds, courtesy of K-9 officer Neville.

Police added that during the incident, Harner attempted to start a fire in the residence by pouring gasoline on the floor.

Harner is currently in the custody of the Kosciusko County Sheriff for the warrant, originated in Wabash County. He faces charges in that county of possession of methamphetamine and will likely face Kosciusko County charges of resisting law enforcement and intimidation as a result of the Friday afternoon incident.

According to KCSO, Shively is a 15-year member of the KCSO and a 10-year member of the SWAT Team.

This is an ongoing investigation and no other information will be released at this time, according to a KCSO press release. At the conclusion of the investigation, all information will be turned over to the Kosciusko County Prosecutor for review.
