An apartment fire this morning at 1650 E. Smith St., Warsaw, displaced two people.

Warsaw and Winona Lake fire departments were called to the scene and initially called for manpower from Leesburg Fire Department, but it was determined the fire was quickly controlled. The initial 911 call came at 10:18 a.m.

Squad 70, the county’s fire investigation team, has been summoned to the scene to determine a cause for the blaze, which Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory Chief Mike Brubaker said started in a ceiling above the bathroom in Apt. 5. Fortunately, the two-story apartment building includes a single-story addition, which is Apt. 5, and is a block building so the fire was easily contained.

Brubaker said the damage was minimal, but the two occupants of the apartment are not able to stay in the unit due to roof damages caused in an effort to extinguish the fire.

The American Red Cross of Kosciusko County is assisting the residents.
