Students at Madison Elementary are working hard to live up to Warsaw Community School System’s goal to “enrich the lives of others.” Members of Amy Swihart’s first-grade class have helped others through donations of time, money, food, supplies and wishes of goodwill.According to Swihart, students in her first-grade class have focused on a variety of service projects since the beginning of the academic school year. In fact, members of Swihart’s class performed a different service project every month since September. In October, members of the class raised $2,300 for Riley Children’s Hospital. In addition, students have spent time creating and delivering decorations to local veterans, volunteering at the animal shelter and have provided 1,000 canned good items to Combined Community Services.

Students are also learning simple ways to brighten others days through the creation of a February flipbook titled, “100 Ways To Enrich The Lives of Others as by a First Grade Student.” The flipbook includes 100 small ways a person may be able to make a difference in another’s life as per one of Swihart’s students.

“Our school does the same thing, it’s happening down every hallway and it’s really just awesome to see,” said Swihart. “You don’t have to have a lot of money to enrich someone else’s life, you can do it without any money at all, it’s not about the dollars and cents all the time. We try and spread kind words all the time.”

The presentation was made during Monday night’s regular meeting of the Warsaw Community Schools board meeting.
