Marijuana To Be Legal In Michigan
ST. JOSEPH, MICH. — It’s official: Michigan’s board of canvassers certified the voice of the voters today, making recreational marijuana legal in the state on December 6th.
But don’t expect to buy it anytime soon.
Michigan’s Department of Licensing still needs to create rules for dispensaries and that likely won’t happen until next year.
Even when that happens, not every community wants those dispensaries.
Niles voted to ban recreational marijuana from being sold in city limits for now, and Monday, St. Joseph said no as well.
City commissioners say there simply isn’t enough information on what legalized marijuana will do to the city.
They say there are several questions that need to be answered such as what kind of manufacturing would come in, where would a dispensary be appropriate to set up, and how would it affect federal funding, since it’s still federally illegal.
The city attorney says it’s so new and different than medical marijuana that those answers wouldn’t be known for a while.
Until they get those answers, the sale and manufacturing of marijuana will have to stay out of St. Joseph.
“We don’t know what we would be opting into or out off necessarily and where to draw the lines,” said Laurie Schmidt, St. Joseph City Attorney. “It’s just too soon.”
“We would really like to understand what the regulations are going to be and understand what the impact could be for the city, and then we can always opt back in at the time if we want to,” said Laura Goos, St. Joseph Mayor Protem.
