The Syracuse Library offers more than books. Patrons are now offered Book Page magazine, a review of new books. Stopping in at the library can keep one informed about programs in the community and now, ideas about what to read next. Pictured, from left, are Susan Rice, Sharon Woods, and Marty Scearce.

SYRACUSE — The Syracuse Public Library will host the following events in September:

Area Libraries Work Together

The staff of the Syracue Library will be at a training event on Sept. 21 and the library will be closed for the day. The training event is bringing staff from libraries in northwest Indiana to the Oakwood event center for a day of speakers and presenters. The day-long conference is an opportunity for the people from area libraries to interface for professional development and to visit other areas.

Science and Art Connect

Artists manipulate objects to create a different perspective in which to view the world around us. Sculpture in particular uses engineering solutions for a visual statement. Elizabeth Wamsley, local award winning clay artist, is leading a discussion and showing a short documentary “Science and Art” at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17. Everyone is invited to this free event. Those taking the bus to the Meijer Sculpture Garden and ArtPrize on Sept. 22 will be given maps about Saturday’s events.

The Week’s Programs

Programs at the Syracuse Library are free and for the most part feature drop-in activities. Harry Potter craft club for teens is the exception. Registration is required to make the limited number of Harry Potter themed crafts at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18.

Story times have started up with STEM activities for older preschoolers at 10:30 a.m. Mondays. Babies and toddlers are scheduled to have some farm fun on 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays. School children can relax and do arts, crafts and games at the weekly Fun at Four on Thursdays.

An additional chair yoga group has been added to the weekly activities. A slower, more problem focused class meets at the Syracuse Community Center at 10:30 a.m. Thursdays. The half hour is ideal for people that struggle with balance or restricted movement. Walk on the Trails followed by advanced chair yoga continues to welcome new people at 9 and 9:30 a.m. Thursdays. Pyramid easy chair yoga offers basic yoga poses using a chair at 10:15 a.m. Tuesdays.

Staff from WorkOne sets up their services from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays.
