PIERCETON — The Animal Welfare League of Kosciusko County is at max capacity for cats and is seeking the public’s assistance with cat adoption.

“This is the season for cat breeding, so there’s overpopulation in epic proportions,” said AWL Executive Director Katey Wilks Zemen. “We have absolutely no more kennels to house cats.”

Currently, the shelter has more than 200 cats in its care and is unable to accept any incoming cats.

“As much as we hate turning animals away, we don’t really have a choice,” said Zemen. “We just don’t have the space at this time.”

To help the AWL reduce its number of cats, barn, adult and senior cats are all available for a $5 adoption fee. Kittens are available for $10. All cats are up to date on their vaccinations and are spayed and neutered.

In contrast to lap cats, barn cats choose to be working cats that catch mice in barns and warehouses. There are more than 20 barn cats available for adoption.

“We have so many amazing, healthy cats,” said Zemen. “We’re encouraging the community to help us by not only adopting cats, but by spreading the word as well.”
