WEST NEWTON — A West Newton family is happy to have its dog back after the pup was taken from a store near their home.
Julie Gill said their 12-year-old Great Pyrenees had been sneaking down to the corner market down the street from their home. People in town who had seen the dog, named McKayla, would buy her Slim Jims and other treats, which is why she kept going back.
Security footage showed a man and woman approaching McKayla Friday and forcing her into their car around 7:30 p.m. Gill said the store owner told the woman that McKayla belonged to the Gills, but the woman said, “But I really want her.”
Gill said the man in the security footage came to their home on Saturday morning and asked if they were McKayla’s owners. She said the man said he’d bring the dog back, but by Tuesday afternoon, they still hadn’t seen McKayla or heard from the man.
But by Tuesday evening, Gill posted on Facebook, saying McKayla was back home.
She thanked everyone for widely sharing her story, and said even though McKayla was a fixture in West Newton for years, making plenty of friends, the days of her unsupervised visits were over.
McKayla has lived on the farm the Gills own in southern Marion County for her entire life, even though the Gills just moved in about six months ago. The dog came as part of the deal when they bought the home from the previous owners, and is a working farm dog who protects the neighborhood pets and farm animals from coyotes.
Even though McKayla has only been part of their family for a few months, Gill said she is well-loved and enjoys the company of her new owners.
