CLAYPOOL — A Claypool man is facing charges after an altercation involving his stepson. Keith A. Brown, 61, 824 East CR 800S, Claypool, is being charged with intimidation with a deadly weapon, a level 5 felony. 

According to the affidavit of probable cause, on July 8, officers with the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department responded to a fight in progress with shots fired at 824 East CR 800S in Kosciusko County. Upon arrival, officers spoke with a female, who advised that she and a male live in a camper behind the male’s mother’s residence, located at the 824 East CR 800S address. According to the female, she and the male left to pick up a minor. When they returned, the male’s mother was throwing their cats out of the camper, which led to an argument. 

Officers spoke with the male, who advised that when he and the female returned to the camper, his mother was intoxicated and was throwing their cats out of the camper. He stated that his mother punched the female on the left side of her face. He said he then intervened and pushed the female and his mother apart. The male advised that his stepfather, Brown, saw the disturbance and came outside and began to argue with him.

According to court documents, Brown went back inside the residence and came out with a shotgun. The male advised that he and the female got into the vehicle to leave, and Brown told the male to “get out of the car so I can shoot you.” As they were leaving, Brown reportedly pointed the gun in the direction of the vehicle and shot into the ground. The male described the gun as a 12 gauge shotgun. He advised that the minor was in the vehicle with him and the female at that time.

Officers spoke with Brown, who stated that the male threatened him so he went inside and retrieved a shotgun. Brown admitted that when the male and female were leaving, he fired a shot into the air to scare them off. Brown told officers that the shotgun was on the table. Officers obtained the shotgun and ejected a spent round from the chamber. 

Brown was booked at the Kosciusko County Jail Monday, Aug. 13, on a  $10,250 surety and cash bond.
