NLC SportsMISHAWAKA — After nearly a century in the Northern Indiana Conference, the Mishawaka Cavemen will join a new conference in 2020.

Mishawaka High School accepted an invitation to join the Northern Lakes Conference today, according to WSBT Radio. The Class 4A school with an enrollment of 1,483 students has been a part of the NIC since the league’s inception in 1927. Mishawaka will replace Elkhart Memorial in the NLC when Memorial consolidates with Elkhart Central in 2020-21, and the newly-formed Elkhart High School becomes a member of the NIC.

Mishawaka owns one semi state football championship in 2012, two regional and 10 sectional titles. The Cavemen own two regional and nine sectional boys basketball championships, while the girls basketball program owns two regional and six sectional titles. The baseball program holds one regional and six sectional championships, and the softball team has one regional and eight sectional titles, but the school’s greatest athletic success has come in wrestling, where the Cavemen have won 11 semi state titles and three team state championships in the IHSAA team tournament.

Current Notre Dame distance runner and Mishawaka alum Anna Rohrer was a two-time national champion at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships in 2012 and 2014 and a three-time state champion in the girls 3200-meter run. She won a 1600-meter track title in 2015 following her 2014 cross country state championship.

Current Warsaw head football coach Bart Curtis helmed Mishawaka’s program for 10 years, guiding the Cavemen to their 2012 state finals appearance and six of the program’s 10 sectional titles.
