GOSHEN – A singles sweep carried the Fairfield girls tennis team to a first-round sectional win Wednesday night.
The Falcons picked up a 4-1 victory over Goshen in the Goshen Sectional contested at Goshen Middle School.
Fairfield advances to play Jimtown Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in one semifinal match. The other Thursday semifinal will pit defending sectional champion NorthWood versus Bethany Christian, also at 4:30 p.m.
The semifinal winners meet in the title match Friday at 4:30 p.m. with the champion advancing to the Northridge Regional next Tuesday to face the winner of the Angola Sectional.
Standout Morgan Mast led the way for Fairfield versus Goshen. The senior ace picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over sophomore Anna Podgorski at No. 1 singles.
Senior Sidney Hochstedler won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles play for the Falcons as she defeated freshman Lucy Kramer.
The match of the night came on the No. 3 singles court as senior Alexandra Swank outlasted junior Madison Rittenhouse. Swank rallied for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 win in the match that lasted 3 1/2 hours.
The Falcons picked up a win at No. 2 doubles as the team of sophomores Riley Miller and Madeline Gawthrop topped the Goshen duo of sophomore Sophia Kirkton and Sophia Kellenberger 6-4, 6-0.
Goshen’s No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Sage Christner and freshman Kathryn Detwiler beat juniors Madison Cole and Kylie Miller 6-0, 4-6, 6-1. The Goshen team will advance on in the individual portion of the tourney series for undefeated No. 1 doubles teams.
