Spring Clean-Up, Fire Department Fundraiser Discussed at Silver Lake Council Meeting

SILVER LAKE  —  Silver Lake Town Marshal Jason McGlennen requested permission to hire a part-time deputy at the Silver Lake Town Council meeting held Wednesday, May 9. Council members agreed to this, with the condition that the part-time deputy be allowed 16 hours per week at the rate of $13 per hour. 

Silver Lake spring clean-up is scheduled for this Saturday, May 12. Residents are asked to have items put out Friday evening, as pick-up will start at 7 a.m. or earlier Saturday morning. The following items are prohibited and will not be removed: paints, oils, televisions, computers, microwaves, lawn waste such as leaves, grass and limbs, tires and anything containing freon, unless the freon has been drained and the item has been tagged by a service professional.

The Silver Lake Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting a dinner and auction fundraiser from 4 to 7 p.m. this Saturday, May 12. Dinner includes grilled tenderloin and french fries and will be sold from 4 to 7 p.m. or until sold out. Freewill donations will be accepted. The auction is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. A complete list of auction items can be found here.   

Silver Lake Fire Chief John Conley approached council members about the option of installing solar panels on the roof of the fire station. Council members asked Conley to check into this further and return with more information.

Other News:

  • Council members approved a variance for Joe Fisher on Poplar Street.
  • Mark Sullivan from Midwestern Engineering, Inc., Indianapolis, attended the meeting to give a brief update regarding plans for the wastewater and storm sewer project.
  • The conditions of piers were discussed, with Silver Lake Street and Sewer Superintendent JT Prater offering to check all piers.
  • A request was received for a donation for Silver Lake Days. Council members agreed to give a donation of $500 again this year. Council members stated that if they are given advance notice of this next year they may consider donating a larger amount.
  • A resident expressed concern with flooding. Council members advised that the wastewater and storm sewer project should address these issues.
  • Two Silver Lake residents experienced water leaks. Heath Allen received a credit adjustment for his February bill. Ora Prater was approved for a one month credit adjustment.
  • Cardinal Center requested a discount on sprinkler fees. This request was not approved.
  • The next regular meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 6. The meeting will be held on the first Wednesday of the month rather than the second Wednesday due to a schedule conflict for Silver Lake Clerk-Treasurer Tonya Conley.
