Loren K. Shambarger, 83, Rochester and Macy, was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away at noon, Saturday, March 24, 2018, at his daughter’s home.
On Sept. 5, 1934, Loren Keith Shambarger was born in Miami County to James and Dorthea Goodwin Shambarger. Growing up he shared his childhood with a sister Norma and two brothers Bill and Sylvester. With great yellow jacket pride, Mr. Shambarger graduated from Macy High School in 1952. During his high school years he played forward on the basketball team.
In the Macy United Methodist Church, on May 16, 1954, he married the love of his life and best friend, Gladys A. Powell. They shared 61 years of life’s adventures. From their union came four wonderful children. The family tree continued to grow with the added blessings of three more generations.
Mr. Shambarger’s memberships include the Macy Christian Church, and the Lincoln Masonic lodge # 523 where he was a 32nd degree Mason. He was also a member of the Mizpah Shrine Club of Fort Wayne.
A collector of Harley-Davidson Motorcycles, he once owned a fleet of nine H-D. His favorite was his green 1950 Flathead. Two of his beauties are housed in the Brandt’s museum in Wabash. He enjoyed day trips around northern Indiana and the freedom of catching the warm summer breezes.
With a passion for agriculture and love for being in the country, the Shambargers made their home on a beautiful hobby farm near Macy. They raised a few Angus, some hogs and sheep. The land provided hay and corn for their livestock. They annually planted a truck-patch garden sharing the bountiful harvest with family and friends. Every year, he planted five acres of sweet corn and gave it away to neighbors and friends. Passers-by would see him on board one of his shiny red International tractors. He was proud to have a small fleet being always prepared for anything.
Mr. Shambarger’s loyal canine companions, the Boxers, Brownie I or Brownie II were always at his side. Paramount in his life was his family. He loved attending the grandchildren’s soccer matches, baseball games and school concerts. Making memories with family during special celebrations and the holidays were the best.
He will be lovingly remembered by four children: David Shambarger and wife Susan of Macy; Beverly Cattin and husband Dennis of Peru; Loren “Skip” Shambarger II and wife Janet of Macy; Jean LeJeune and husband Robert of Peru; nine grandchildren: Jim Cattin, Shane Cattin, Daniel “DJ” Cattin and wife Amber, James “JR” Cattin and wife Tina, David Shambarger and wife Lora, Matthew Cattin and wife Hannah, Nikki Shambarger and companion Curtis Babbs, Michael Shambarger, Ryan Shambarger and wife Laura; 18 great grandchildren: Emily Cattin and companion Garrett Straley, Sierra Cattin, Allison Cattin, Bridgett Cattin and companion Brayton Thomas, Ethan Shambarger, Ryan Cattin, Evan Shambarger, Lennon Shambarger, Audrey Shambarger, Tynnleigh Cattin, Conner Bahney, Crew Cattin, Max Martin, Greyson Cattin, Chase Cattin, Jordon Miller, Coulton Miller, Kynnsleigh Cattin; great-great grandson Bentley Newman; four sisters-in-law: Carolyn Richards, Nelle Scott, Mary Miller, Janet Shambarger; and numerous nieces and nephews.
