SYRACUSE — They are on top of the world … literally.

Wawasee Iron Pride Robotics team 574C, known as Centurion, and made up of Micah Rassi, Evan Rassi, Nick Murphy and Joe Kelsheimer, broke the Zone VEX Robotic Skills world record twice during the Crown Point Winter Tournament Saturday, Feb. 17. Centurion posted overall scores of 208 and 212 to overtake a team from Singapore as the top ranked team in the entire world.

Centurion partnered with another Wawasee team, 574E Legion made up of Adrieanna Yoder, Adam Spurling, Dalin Powell and Jacob Garcia, and a team from Portage against two Portage teams and a third Wawasee team, 574A Legends (Madi McDonald, Joe Lecount, Davey Daffron and Zach Avery) in the finals of Saturday’s tournament. After four rounds, Centurion and Legion emerged victorious.

Legion qualified for the Indiana VEX Robotics State Championships Saturday, March 10, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and will join eight other Wawasee teams. In addition, team 574K Athena made up of Makenna Tharp and Norah Miller won the Judges Award and earned a robot skill score of 112, putting them in the running for a state championship invitation.
