WARSAW — Around a dozen people came out in the cold weather Wednesday night, Dec. 6, to protest against the GOP tax legislation that was recently passed. The Kosciusko County Democrats rallied at the southeast side of the courthouse square.

According to a press release issued by the Kosciusko Democrats, “The Kosciusko County Democrats find it unconscionable that our Republican Senator Todd Young would vote for something that was passed in the middle of the night (2 a.m.) with little to no public hearings, and was so rushed, that amendments were literally written in by hand.”

Chairman Brian Smith had obligations to attend to and was unable to make it to the rally, but volunteer coordinator Rebecca Burton commented, “We’re protesting this GOP tax bill that’s gone through the Senate and the House; we are protesting the fact that they are giving tax cuts to millionaires and billionaires and corporations, and screwing over the middle class and the poor.”

The group also feels that, if the legislation is enacted, it would jeopardize the local economy. “If the GOP plan to tax graduate students becomes law, there will be fewer engineers and/or bio-science students available to work at Zimmer-Biomet, DePuy and a host of other smaller local orthopedic firms,” states the release.

The Kosciusko Democrats believe the new legislation will only widen the gap between the rich and the poor, harming the middle class. Given the weather and the fact that it was a week night, Burton was happy with the turnout.
