Marandet Making His Mark Again For Cougars

SPRING ARBOR, MI. – Sophomore slump?
Paul Marandet is having none of that thus far in his second season at Spring Arbor University.
Marandet, the former hoops standout at WCHS, is putting together his second straight stellar season for the Cougars early on in the 2017-18 campaign.
Marandet is once again thriving as a do-it-all performer for coach Ryan Cottingham’s team. The 6-0 guard currently leads the Cougars in scoring (17.0), assists (6.2) and minutes played per game (32.7).
Marandet had a game-high 18 points on Saturday as Spring Arbor dropped a 73-72 final at Marian in Crossroads League play. He was 7-7 from the free throw line and also dished out five assists in the league contest.
Marandet is shooting 47 percent from the field, including 33 percent from 3-point range for the Cougars, who are 10-2 overall and 1-2 in Crossroads League play. He is also shooting 79 percent from the free throw line and also ranks second on his team in both steals and blocked shot.
Marandet, who helped Warsaw reach the Class 4-A semistate game in 2016, had a fabulous freshman season. He started 29 games a year ago, averaging 13 points and 4.6 assists per game. Marandet earned All-Freshman Team honors and was a Third Team All-Crossroads League selection following his first collegiate season.
Spring Arbor went 18-14 overall and 9-9 in Crossroads League play a year ago. Marandet helped the Cougars to a huge turnaround after they were just 8-22 overall and 2-16 in league action two seasons ago.
Marandet turned in a career-best performance two weeks ago in an 83-73 loss to No. 3 Saint Francis. He scored a career-high 28 points in the conference contest and also dished out nine assists. The loss snapped an eight-game winning streak by the Cougars, which was just one victory short of tying the program record.
Marandet helped coach Doug Ogle’s Tigers post a 25-2 mark during his senior season in 2015-16. He was named a first-team pick to the Ink Free News All-Area team following his senior year after earning the IFN Player of the Year honor for his junior season.
Spring Arbor will play four conference games in the area in the next two months. The Cougars play at Goshen College on Jan. 2 at 7 p.m. and at Grace College on Jan. 13 at 3 p.m. Spring Arbor also has games at Huntington on Jan. 27 at 3 p.m. and at Bethel on Feb. 6 at 7 p.m.
