Warsaw Basketball: Ladies Drop Opener At Luers
FORT WAYNE – A cold second half offensively proved costly for the Warsaw girls basketball team Saturday night in its season opener.
The Tigers managed just 10 second-half points in losing to host Fort Wayne Luers 42-30.
Warsaw trailed just 22-20 at halftime before being outscored by a 20-10 count in the final half. Warsaw shot just 29 percent from the field in the contest and also had 19 turnovers.
The game marked the debut of new Warsaw coach Lenny Krebs, who was hired in the Spring to replace Michelle Harter. Krebs, who played at Grace College, spent the last 14 seasons as the girls basketball coach at Goshen High School.
Warsaw graduated six seniors, including all five starters, from last year’s team that finished 20-4.
Luers, which finished 7-16 last year, led 11-9 after the opening period Saturday night.
Junior Maddie Ryman led the way for Warsaw with eight points. Kacy Bragg scored seven points and Brielle Harrison had six for the Tigers. Kennedy Patton had four points and Kaylee Patton two.
Emma Bohnenkamper had three points and a team-high 11 rebounds for Warsaw.
Kathryn Knapke paced Luers to the win with 12 points and eight rebounds. Kennedy Glenn had nine points on three treys for the winners.
Warsaw won the junior varsity game 45-16. Kensie Ryman had 14 points and Kendall Wayne eight to lead the JV Tigers.
Warsaw plays Manchester (1-0) in its home opener Wednesday night. Manchester, coached by former Triton standout Jacob Everett, beat Adams Central 49-19 Saturday night. The Tigers then play at Huntington North (0-0) Friday night.
Luers hosts Angola (1-0) Tuesday evening. Angola opened its season by defeating New Haven 66-25 on Oct. 31.
