hodgesBetty L. Hodges, 89, a resident of rural South Whitley, Ind., passed away at 12:30 a.m. Thursday March 21, 2013 at the home of her daughter. She had been in failing health.

She was born May 10, 1923 in Carroll County, Ind., to the late Leo F. and Axie E. (Cross) Landis. Her formative years were spent in north central Indiana. She graduated from Larwill High School in 1941.

On June 1, 1941 she was united in marriage to George E. Hodges. They made their home on a farm in rural South Whitley. Mr. Hodges died Nov. 27, 1995.

She began her work career with General Electric, Fort Wayne, Ind., and then the former Blue Bell, Columbia City, Ind. She was a full-time homemaker. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church, South Whitley.

She is survived by her two children: Mark E. (Amy Crickmore) Hodges, South Whitley; Mary L. (Mike) Mudrack, South Whitley; grandchildren: Jennifer (Jamie) Hotchkiss, Huntington, Ind.; Jessica (Tom) McFarland, Mentone, Ind.; Neil (Megan) Hodges, Syracuse, Ind.; Lisa (Kris) Harvey, Phoenix, Ariz.; Emily (Kyle) Myers, South Whitley; and Marissa (Josh) Cripe, Claypool, Ind.; eight great-grandchildren; a sister: Joanna Fry, South Whitley; and a sister-in-law: D. Pauline Landis, South Whitley.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Landis.

Visitation will be 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 24, at Smith and Sons Funeral Chapel, South Whitley, and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday, March 25 at the funeral chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 25, at the chapel with Pastor Steve Massie of First Baptist Church, South Whitley officiating. Burial will be in the South Whitley cemetery.
