WINONA LAKE — Winona Lake Redevelopment Commission wasted no time Thursday night, Oct. 12. The commission breezed through its increased approvals for both the Winona Lake beautification improvement project and the Winona trash receptacles at its meeting in Winona Lake Town Hall.

After years of refusing to place trash bins around the area, the board has begun its attack on liter with the help of Doty and Sons. Originally, Winona Lake was asking for eight receptacles, but to get things rolling, Doty and Sons placed four 550 pound, concrete receptacles around the area. “We’ve already added three,” said Nick Hauck, managing director of the Village at Winona. “So since I’ve been here, we’ll have added five.”

While Hauck was simply seeking reimbursement of $1,920.20, the board went a step further, approving the original request for eight trash bins.

“I’m trying to put more trash cans out because littering is a problem,” said Hauck, “and it’s easier to give people some place to throw their trash.”

But it wasn’t the only thing the committee was happy to increase. The commission approved to extend the Winona Lake beautification improvement Project from 200 feet to 250 feet at the request of Bruce Shaffner. The 50 foot extension would cost an additional $4,000 to the project with the town paying 90 percent. With the extension, the project’s total increased to $29,178.
