Dakota-KimblerA foiled carjacking attempt and a shooting has led the Whitley County Prosecutor to file felony charges of attempted murder and attempted carjacking against a 17-year-old.

The suspect, 17-year-old Dakota Kimbler of Rome City, Ind., has been waived to adult court and is being held in the Whitley County Jail without bond. Whitley County authorities say Kimbler escaped from the Pierceton Woods juvenile detention center on Saturday night and hid in an unlocked car that was parked across from the center at Paragon Medical.

On Sunday morning, police were called to the intersection of SR 5 and West Old Trail in Larwill when the victim, Johnny Couch, noticed someone in the back seat of his vehicle. As he turned to confront the suspect, Couch was shot in the chest.

Despite his injury, Couch was able to wrestle the gun away from Kimbler and held the teen at gunpoint until police arrived.

On Monday, Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department officials were called by another employee of Paragon Medical who reported a handgun was missing from his vehicle. Police have confirmed that stolen weapon was used in the shooting.

Kimbler is being charged with felony charges of attempted murder, attempted carjacking and possession of stolen property. An additional misdemeanor charge of possession of a handgun without a license has also been filed.
Kimbler’s next court appearance is set for Jan. 7.
