FULTON – It was a loss in the final matchup of the season for the Lakeland Christian Academy volleyball team at Caston Thursday night. But the two teams won in the sense of coming together for a bigger purpose.

Caston won the volleyball matchup 3-1, going 25-23, 25-19, 23-25, 25-20, but with a pair of moms in the Caston crowd fighting cancer, both teams saw its unity as a win. The two teams came together in pink, as October is nationally designated as cancer awareness month largely made famous by the breast cancer awareness initiatives in recent years. The two teams used the moniker “Digging For A Cure” as a unification to help the Caston volleyball family, as well as those from the area who could use the fundraising and support.

In the match itself, LCA had another big night from its star, Kyla Kohler, recording 20 assists, six aces and six kills. Carlie Wise had eight aces to go with 10 kills, Heather Plastow added 16 digs and the duo of Morgan Ziebarth and Baylee Wiley chipped in 17 digs.

LCA finishes the regular season 10-15 overall and will prepare for its involvement in the Fort Wayne Blackhawk Sectional, where it drew the bye game against Fremont in the tourney semis. The matchup is set for 1 p.m. on Oct. 14.
