Lou Ann Parker sits with her variety of musical instruments which she uses as a hospice volunteer.

Parker retired after 37 years at Zimmer-Biomet. Her plan was to help care for her five grandchildren until they were in school and volunteer. Parker and her mother both had a love for music. “It would please my mother that I am using my musical talents and time to bless others,” said Parker. She plays a variety of lively instruments including spoons, the tenor ukulele, the washboard and other percussion instruments. She also plays at three local nursing homes.

In May, Parker completed her hospice training. When hospice patients request it, she plays her various instruments and sings to them. “Sometimes they even feel well enough to sing along,” stated Parker. Music has such a calming effect on hospice patients and it brings them joy.
